“I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels.”
Maya Angelou
Empowerment is a life long process which begins with the belief in possibilities.Women have always come together to steer the course - changing the mindset which sought to limit the potential of women to that which recognizes their great leadership and capabilities. From demanding the right to vote to breaking down barriers at educational institutions, corporations, athletic fields and battlefields, women have always stood together in the face of adversity to overcome obstacles and affect change - blazing the trail for women’s empowerment and equality. The Empowerment Council is an elite group of donors who embrace the YWCA’s mission: “eliminating racism, empowering women” and pledge their time, talent and resources to actively work in support of it.Historically, women have long been disempowered through gender bias, educational limitations, and gross inequalities which still undermine women today. Throughout history, there has been positive change for women, but there is still work to be done. As women leaders in our community, we can continue to instill self-confidence, provide opportunities, and serve as catalysts for growth and change. The Council convenes quarterly so that members can discuss ways in which the YWCA can continue to impact the lives of New Mexican women and girls. Each Council member pledges $1,000 to the Empowerment Fund which helps the YWCA fulfill and expand its programs and services. It is our belief that together we can be not only an instrument of hope – but ultimately a means of power in the lives we touch and the future we change. If you are interested in joining or in learning more about the YWCA's Empowerment Council, please contact us at 505-254-9922.
