Providers Allied for Nutrition (PAN) is a food program sponsored by the USDA for the purpose of reimbursing home child care providers for nutritious meals served to children in their safekeeping.
This is an important source of funds for home child care providers, particularly in New Mexico, where the average provider earns less than $14,000 annually. In many cases, the average $90.00 per month per child reimbursed to providers determines the success or failure of their child care operations.
Of all the children in child care in New Mexico, an estimated 80% receive care by home providers (much higher than national rates). Providers participating in the PAN program have the added benefit of assuring that the children they care for receive at least one healthy meal per day. YWCA is proud to report that last year more than 4,000 children received nutritious meals each month by Providers actively enrolled in the PAN program.
The PAN program also teaches required training in nutrition, safety and child development for participating providers and provides links to other YWCA services.
